To my beloved wife

What is a mother? What is a wife? These are questions that the birthday cards in the store try to answer. They all fall short of the picture of my wife! I take this day to celebrate her birthday and give thanks to the God of Heaven and earth for the blessing that she is to me and to Emily.

For those of you who do not know, Dawn has been the bread winner in our household for some time. She has put me through seminary and made sure that we had a stable income for several years. We know that it is a blessing from God and it was His way of allowing us to accomplish His plan. We don’t know where He is going to take us from here, but we do know that He will continue to provide for us in every way.

Ever since we got married, and I am sure many years before, Dawn has wanted to be a mom. We agreed at the start of our marriage to wait for a few years and those few years turned into a decade, not by her choice, mostly by mine. We are approaching our 13th wedding anniversary and have a beautiful little girl who will be a year old soon. Dawn has made many sacrifices in her life and she rarely complains. She is still sacrificing today as she goes to work while I stay home and take care of Emily. The good part is that she works from home and can see her all day long, but her desire is to nurture her and to take care of her; she has not had this blessing yet, except for the weekends.

A time is coming when all our dreams will come true. We don’t know if it will be in the next month or the next year, but we believe that God is faithful and will answer our prayers by supplying me with a job to support us. Until that time, Dawn will continue to do what she can to make sure that our family has what it needs to make it through the day.

As I mentioned, the birthday cards fall short of an accurate description of my wife. There is one author who has painted a better picture; a picture of a wife who loves and follows the One, True God. The Proverbs 31 wife…

Description of a Worthy Woman

10 An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life.
13 She looks for wool and flax And works with her hands in delight.
14 She is like merchant ships; She brings her food from afar.
15 She rises also while it is still night And gives food to her household And portions to her maidens.
16 She considers a field and buys it; From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She girds herself with strength And makes her arms strong.
18 She senses that her gain is good; Her lamp does not go out at night.
19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hands grasp the spindle.
20 She extends her hand to the poor, And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household, For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them, And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, And she smiles at the future.
26 She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27 She looks well to the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
29 "Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all."
30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
31 Give her the product of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates.
Prov 31:10-31 (NASB)

This is my attempt to praise the woman who not only fears the LORD, but who brings joy and happiness to the family that loves her!

Happy Birthday, Dawn!
